To All The Mother’s That Love Me

May 9, 2010

She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.  Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.  Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.  Proverbs 31:27-31

Today is Mother’s Day, and I’m thinking about my mom.  She is a very special woman.  She has to be; she knows me better than anyone, and still she loves me.  Let me put this in context; I was Dennis the Menace and Calvin & Hobbs all rolled into one.  I’m sure there were times when my mom just knew that I was some alien medical experiment gone awry.  But she still loves me.  Maybe that’s what defines true motherhood.  “She loves me anyway.”  Not because of… but in spite of… Thanks Mom!

I also feel very fortunate to have had other “mothers” at different times in my life.  Maybe you have as well.  I remember Gail Moody, Shirley Pipes and Dot Young, (all preachers’ wives) who put up with my presence in their homes and at their dinner tables too many times to count.  Thanks.  I remember Beverly Logan, my substitute mom, when I left home for AIM.  A more special woman I’ve never known.  She accepted me and treated me just like one of her own.  She’s gone now, but her influence lives on.  I remember Carolyn Bassham, a.k.a. Shy Violet; she loves me even though I would drop by unexpectedly and catch her in her housecoat and curlers.  Sorry. But thanks for being a great encourager.

I can’t forget my mother-in-law, Oleta Trigg, who has given me the greatest gift of my life: Leisa.  I am forever in your debt.  And my beautiful wife Leisa, while she is not my mother, she too has done her share of “mothering“ me, as well as being the mother of our children.

Take some time to honor your mother, -all of them.

Words cannot begin to express my gratitude and love.

Happy Mother’s Day

Love you all.——Your Son, by birth or by choice,
John
